Performing Arts Workshop with Davis Freeman

As part of the international performing arts festival ConTempo, performing arts professionals and students (ages 18+) are invited to a dynamic, two-day practical workshop led by Davis Freeman. This intensive laboratory explores the powerful relationship between movement and text, investigating how they complement one another to strengthen stage presence, spark performative situations, and expand communication with audiences.

Over two days, participants will dive into different sides of Davis’ practice, working both in the studio and out on the streets:

• Day 1: Voice, Text, and Body (In the Studio) Investigate different ways to use the voice and manipulate multiple meanings out of text using volume, tone, and rhythm. Working with and without microphones, you will use line games, newspaper articles, and improvisation to generate your own material. This day guides you to improvise texts from your own interests and apply them to mini-performances that seamlessly mix contemporary dance with the spoken word.
• Day 2: Architecture, Objects, and the City (In Public Spaces) Step outside to discover and embody the secrets within a room, a building, and the city itself. You will dance with ghosts, using the local architecture, the public, and your personal archive to inspire movement. Explore what it means to be a sacred observer, how to disappear, and what it takes to stand out. By slowing down and using the urban landscape as inspiration, you will open new doors for your creativity. (Note: This day takes place outside, rain or shine).

The workshop will be led by Davis Freeman – an American artist based in Brussels with his company Random Scream. He makes contemporary theater and dance, photo/video installations and curatorial projects. His work is referred to as devious political theatre or docu-performances and often fights for a more ecological planet. On the side he also teaches “Non Acting Acting for the Performer” and works as a voice artist.

• Dates and Times: 3–4 August 2026, 1:30–5:30 pm
• Location: The first part of the workshop will take place at Kaunas Culture Centre, the second part will happen in public spaces around the city.

• What to bring? A mobile phone and wireless headphones
• What to wear? Please wear regular everyday clothes and comfortable shoes on both days (no dancewear). Your clothes may get a little dirty during the workshop, so feel free to bring a change of clothes if you wish. 
• Participation fee: €15,69 for both days.
