Gazing at One Another

Recommended age: 16+
Duration: 50 min

I am a body.
I am an image of the body captured while waiting for the image in my head to resemble the one in the camera.
I am created by your gaze.
I am behind the borders of your gaze.
I am a ghost playing the role she gave me.
I am a young woman.
I am an old woman.
I am a woman.
I am a myth.
I gaze at myself and see another.

“Gazing at one another” is a performative action researching the female perspective in visual and performative arts and the never-ending self-validation process. Here four personalities meet – Eglė Gabrėnaitė, Elžbieta Latėnaitė, Justina Mykolaitytė and Veronika Šleivytė (1904-1998). The latter’s presence is like a fog that hangs among multiplying live-streamed videos, and the words said or sung by the performers. Investigation into the life and work of Veronika Šleivytė has given us an impulse to acknowledge our shifting identities, look at our own reflections and see if we can find a connection to them. We are documenting ourselves and ask if this is enough. Observed by you, we are going on a completely honest journey of self-knowledge.
